Cùl Mòr (Big Back) This Mountain is certainly one of the highlights of the Assynt hills. As is characteristic of many hills in this landscape Cùl Mòr's slopes rise steeply on nearly all sides. This means that the views from the summit on a clear day are breathtaking. At 849m (2830Ft) in height Cùl Mòr is classified as a "Corbett", a Scottish mountain between 2500 and 3000 feet in height. The Route We will meet at the Knockan Crag car park on the A835 approximately 21km north of Ullapool. This is a great attraction in its own right and well worth spending a bit of time looking around the visitor centre and finding out more about the local geology, history, and wildlife. After carefully crossing the A835 we will proceed due north at first following the well made path for just over a mile. At this point the path becomes less pronounced and we will navigate NW climbing to the minor summit of Meall Diomhain. This is a great spot for a refreshment break and with any luck the summit of Cùl Mòr will be on full view to our west. The climb to the top takes us around the flank of Cùl Mòr's north eastern corrie with the last 100m or so being the steepest of the day. The summit trig point is reached abruptly and on a clear day this is a great spot for spending a bit of time to take in the views and enjoy a well earned drink and a bite to eat. Time and weather permitting we will next venture to the NW summit of Sròn Gharbh which offers yet more "wow" moments and plenty of photo opportunities. The route down is via the grassy coire to the south of the Cùl Mòr summit where we will descend and eventually rejoin the path we walked in on. This event will be subject to change dependent upon the weather forecast and the number of bookings. Please check our social media the day before for confirmation.
